This newest of the Russian breeds is a definite charmer. Approved only in 1981, he is becoming the rage in the cities. The Longhaired Toy Ter-rier was developed especially as an urban pet, notably for senior citizens, which could withstand Russian winters. Limited information exists on which breeds were used, although it is thought that long-coated Chihuahuas and small English toys like the Yorkshire were used. The existence of the merle color, as well as good guarding ability, makes one think of small European terriers like the Harlequin Pinscher. The result is a gracious, aristocratic, lively and handsome dog that is easily trained and cared for.

His petite face tapers sharply, and the large ears cascade with flowing hair. His docked tail is held upright, and his every movement is light and quick. A wide range of colors adds to his appeal. He is unknown outside the Soviet Union. But at home, demand far outweighs supply due to their small litters.
