The Black Mouth Cur has a burning desire to please his master. A courageous, swift hunter of squirrel, coon, boar or bear, he never retreats. He runs to catch the game and catches to kill. On the track, trailing is semi-open or silent, with a chop or yodel acceptable on tree or at bay. Curs rarely trot, even while hunting, going from a walk to a ground-covering lope.

Black Mouth Cur dogs are avid hunters, yet work stock well too. Breeders say a pup will train himself— treeing, protecting and/or bunching and penning cattle by six months of age. They are used throughout the southern area of the USA.

The Black Mouth Cur owners claim "Old Yeller" as their property, and that is possible, although the dog in the book was bob-tailed. It is certain, whatever the breed, the family of the canine hero was cur.

Predictable, with even temperaments, the Southern Curs are loyal to their families, giving their lives, if necessary, to protect them. The Black Mouth Cur are especially affectionate to women and children, and aloof with strange men. Some object to parents disciplining children which, of course, endears them to youngsters!
