Brought to Spain long ago by the Celts and isolated on the Iberian Peninsula, this breed has remained fairly pure. The Sabueso is a classic mastiff or St. Hubert-type hound with heavy bone, large ponderous head, long pendulous ears, lots of flew and dewlap, low-set tail and short on leg.
Hunted in packs at one time, these dogs are now used mostly by law enforcement authorities for tracking. They are particularly adapted for long hours of work in the heat, and have an abundance of energy. The breed needs discipline in training since it can be temperamental and self-willed. But these same qualities have given this dog the perseverance necessary to follow cold trails for many hours. They are loyal and affectionate to their masters. The two types are similar with the exception of size and minor color differences.
