JAPANESE TERRIER

COUNTRY: Japan
HEIGHT: 12-13 inches
COAT: Short, smooth
COLOR: Tricolor, with white predominating
OTHER NAMES: Nippon Terrier
Group:Terrier

The Smooth Fox Terrier traveled all the way from Holland to Japan in 1702 to produce the first Japanese Terrier, bred from crossings with native breeds of that era. Type was refined in Yokohama and Kobe, harbor towns. They were designed exclusively as pets, to be carried about when their owners went out. Nicknames include Oyuki (snowy) Terrier and Mikado Terrier.

Very much like its progenitor (the Smooth Fox), the terrier from the Land of the Rising Sun has a certain elegance almost hinting of the Whippet. Its slick, smooth coat makes grooming an easy chore, and its lively terrier temperament makes it a spirited pet. Tails are docked and ears are set high and fold forward. It is unknown outside of Japan.
