This Czech national hound is the only scent hound breed native to its country. Although known and used for centuries, formal recognition by the canine governing bodies did not occur until after WWII. The Black Forest Hound probably descended from dogs of Hungary or of the Balkans, with likely crosses to gun dogs or other non-hound breeds.

The Black Forest Hound is a distinctive hound. Tough and protective, the Black Forest Hound makes a diligent watchdog, as it lacks the tranquil, naturally obedient nature of most scent hounds. Although affectionate to his master, the Black Forest Hound requires rigorous early training to serve his purpose. This hound remains widespread throughout Czechoslovakia. The wild boar continues to be his natural prey and he is still hunted extensively in the mountainous regions of Czechoslovakia.
