Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher

COUNTRY: Austria
WEIGHT: 26-40 pounds
HEIGHT: 14-20 inches
COAT: Short, smooth
COLOR: Red, brindle or black/tan often with white markings
OTHER NAMES: Osterreichischer Kurzhaariger Pinscher
GROUP: Terrier

A sturdy dog with roots similar to the German Pinscher, the Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher is in the same height range, although broader and heavier. The standard demands a chest so wide that he appears wider than tall when viewed from the front.

A true terrier who is a likeable and courageous country companion, the Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher does not thrive in city life, unless given plenty of exercise. An urban owner could have a problem with the dog's predisposition to over-zealous barking. He is fearless against predators, enthusiastically goes to ground, and is an alert, noisy alarm dog.

The Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher may be tailless or have a tail rolled up on the back. Ears can be pricked, tipped or rosed. The hair, while shortish, tends to have some fringe on the belly and thighs. Despite a long history, he is quite rare today.
